The School: Myton School

Myton School in Warwick have been an Enabling Enterprise Partner School for two years. They provide their students with opportunities to learn, develop and enhance their essential enterprise skills through a variety of Lesson Time Projects, Business Trips and Challenge Days.

The Business: Monarch Aircraft Engineering

Monarch Aircraft Engineering is an award-winning independent aircraft maintenance provider. Like cars, planes need regular maintenance and testing and the service Monarch provide can be likened to an MOT for planes from all fleets as well as privately owned jets.

The Challenge: High Flyers

Students from Years 9 to 13 were astounded to find six jet aircraft being worked on inside the building as they entered the Monarch Aircraft Facility in Birmingham. During a tour of the facility with Monarch staff, that included exploring the flight deck and first-class cabin of a Boeing 787 aircraft, the students gained an invaluable insight to the aviation industry as well key information to support their business challenge. Working in teams, students were set the challenge of rebranding a failing airline. Aiming High, teams worked effectively together with people they hadn’t worked with before, factoring in their target market and coming up with some great ideas and plans to re-brand ‘Abacus Airways’.

The Results:

Working to a very tight deadline, the students rose to the challenge as they impressed our volunteers from Monarch with their and branding ideas. Being Creative and using their Problem Solving skills enabled the students to develop great advertising slogans and logos whilst putting together marketing plans for their rebranded airline. The day concluded with confident marketing presentations to our volunteers, now turned judges, as they had the tricky task of picking a winning team. One thing was certain: all students walked away with the pride of having taken their teamwork to the next level.

What they said:

  • “It was good to see how the students were so engaged in the challenge and how well they worked in their teams ” – Teacher, Myton School
  • “It was great to work with the students; the enterprise skills should be a fundamental part of the school curriculum to equip all young people for the workplace” – Volunteer, Monarch Aircraft Engineering
  • “I’ve had a great day. Getting to go into the planes was amazing, the challenge really help to develop my team work and understand that I need to work a bit more on my presenting skills ” – Student, Myton School

Thanks to Monarch for such a great trip day, and to the students and staff from Myton School for your work and enthusiasm throughout.
