The School: Ash Green School

Ash Green School, in Coventry began working in partnership with Enabling Enterprise this academic year and we were very excited to work with them on their first ever business trip! Year 9 students arrived eager, ready for a day of enterprise!

The Business: Birmingham City University

Birmingham City University is a modern university with around 24000 students from 80+ countries. BCU’s early history can be traced back to 1843 but it was in 1992 that University status was granted. It is currently undergoing a multi-million pound development and growth plan – meaning facilities and opportunities for students are incredibly exciting to say the least.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

A warm welcome from BCU staff and student ambassadors to the Year 9 group from Ash Green School gave in insight into the development taking place at the university and the many opportunities available in terms of careers in the built environment. A very interesting tour of the state of the art facilities at BCU – taking in, for example studios which house hundreds of thousands of pounds of film and TV studio equipment, and seeing outstanding creative work of BCU students set the scene for the enterprise challenge. Tasked with redeveloping a brownfield site – not dissimilar to the some of the areas in the vicinity of the university, teams needed to use their creativity and collaborative skills to design and create a new building to satisfy the wants and needs of the whole community. Using their leadership skills throughout the challenge and needing to solve problems effectively – teams impressed by ensuring environmentally friendly features had also been included into their design ideas.

The Results:

Working to tight deadlines and needing to ensure all team members were deployed effectively, it became apparent that persuading the BCU volunteers that their ‘brilliant builds’ were viable was to be no mean feat. Teams set to work on planning their brief ‘pitches’, eager to stand out from the competition with imaginative methods used to convey that their ‘Brilliant Build’ was indeed ‘brilliant’.

What they said:

  • “I am so pleased to see even after just one business trip, these students have developed in confidence and already are making progress in these enterprise skills.” – Teacher, Ash Green School
  • “The day was very well organised and it was great to see all the students get involved and become more confident as the activity went on.” – Volunteer, Birmingham City University
  • “Today has really opened my eyes. There are so many possibilities for me in terms of study and work. This trip at BCU has really got me thinking. ” – Student, Ash Green School

Thanks to Birmingham City University for such a great trip day, and to Year 9 students from Ash Green School for coming along.

  • Challenge Day: Ash Green School and A Day in Politics « Enabling Enterprise Education August 8, 2017

[...] Ash Green embarked upon their first Enabling Enterprise programme at the start of this year, opting for a Whole-School Programme that entails six Challenge Days, 75 trip places to our West Midlands’ employer partners and a significant number of lesson-time projects. Such a size of programme has enabled many students to be offered more than one enterprise experience, thus beginning to cement the meaning of the core enterprise skills and the development of them across the year.
