The School: The South Leeds Academy

The South Leeds Academy have worked in partnership with Enabling Enterprise and PwC for 3 years. Last term their Year 7 students showcased their abilities at Being Creative when they took part in ‘Operation: Moonbase‘. Today the winning teams from that Challenge Day had a unique opportunity to work with volunteers from PwC in the heart of Leeds. Aiming High in a professional and world-leading environment were the order of the day. Did they have what it takes?

The Business: PwC, Leeds

PricewaterhouseCoopers is the world’s largest professional services firm, providing advice and support for businesses in anything from taxes to dealing with climate change. They have a wide range of clients, including, Debenhams, Tesco, Samsung, Sony and Barclays.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

Having got to know the volunteers and learnt all about their jobs and the various pathways they had taken to get there, the pupils dove straight into the role of stock market traders. Working in a Team and Problem Solving were step one to success as the students learnt about their client, and made all important decisions about which companies they would invest her money in. By Listening and Understanding the top tips the PWC staff provided on how to work together efficiently, the day was off to a flying start.

The Results:

As the trades went on is was important that the teams were Staying Positive even when investments did not go the way they had anticipated. It was great to see them appreciate the importance of Leading within the team to ensure they had made their decisions before time ran out. Despite some early hesitation the teams grew hugely in confidence when it came to Presenting and the final reports they made at the end were clear, confident and informative leaving the judges with a tough decision.

What they said:

  • “It was fantastic to see the students come out of themselves as the day went on. At first, some of them were so shy they wouldn’t say anything out loud to the whole group, but by the end of the day they were making confident presentations in front of their judges and their peers.” – Teacher, The South Leeds Academy
  • “It was a great day; the pupils were so engaged and really worked well in teams and developed as the day went on.” – Volunteer, PwC
  • “I loved the whole day, I learnt a lot about the skills needed to be successful and get a good job.” – Student, The South Leeds Academy

Thanks to PwC for such a great trip day, and to Year 7 from The South Leeds Academy for coming along.
