The Schools: The Downs School, The Forest School, Theale Green School and Brakenhale School

These Secondary schools are based in West Berkshire and Wokingham and all chose to enter a team of KS3 students for an enterprise challenge at a local business in Reading.

The Business: GROW@Green Park, Reading

Connecting Thames Valley Tech is a Reading-based platform bringing together the Thames Valley’s fast-growing entrepreneurial ecosystem, tech and digital economy. GROW@GreenPark provides support to Developers, start-ups, scale-ups, digital, makers and freelancers. Our volunteers for the day, Louize, Mark, Emma and Graham, either work for GROW or use the space to collaborate and develop their new businesses.

The Challenge: Tech-xperts

Tech-Xperts highlights how computers communicate through algorithms and this is then related to communication in the workplace. Students, with the support of volunteers from a variety of start-ups at GROW, were encouraged to identify potential barriers faced when communicating with colleagues and clients. Given their brief to design an app to aid communication for the businesses at GROW – students had not a second to spare as they worked towards presenting their creative, solution focussed ideas to the experts.

The Results:

The outcomes from the teams were fantastic, each idea thoughtfully crafted and eloquently presented to the judges. Team Fusion from Brakenhale were awarded the Using Imagination certificate, a fantastic app design as well as a creative idea which was born from the new businesses desire to network easily when they join the GROW hub. Team Super Comz Inc from Theale Green School were acknowledged for their Aiming High, not only were they a 3 person team as opposed to 5, they showed great professionalism throughout their presentation.
For All from Forest School had a App called Flock Talk, complete with sheep logo and slogan ‘join the flock’, they showed excellent collaboration skills and so were awarded the Working in a Team award. The Downs School’s Com Corp showed great enthusiasm and persuasion in their presentations showing excellent Leading skills from each of the students.

What they said:

  • “A brilliant challenge for all the students, who were engaged throughout the day ” – Teacher, The Forest School
  • “I was really impressed by how Team Fusion listened to our problems with empathy and their app design was stunning” – Volunteer, GROW@Green Park
  • “We worked particularly well in a team because we know each other and even though some are quieter than others, we all shared our ideas and respected each other.” – Student, The Downs School

Thanks to GROW@Green Park for such a great trip day, and to Years 8 & 9 from The Downs School, The Forest School, Theale Green School and Brakenhale School for coming along.
