The School: St John and St James CE Primary School

St John and St James, in the London borough of Enfield, have partnered with Enabling Enterprise for the last 4 years. In that time they have completed numerous Challenge Days, Lesson Time Projects and business trips, including their recent Challenge Day ‘Crime Scene Investigation‘. For this business trip to Exterion Media, some lucky year 3 students were chosen to take part, opening their eyes to the world of work. Back at school they have been busy working on their ‘Making Changes’ project so this was a great way for them to apply the skills in a real life professional setting.

The Business: Exterion Media

Exterion Media is a leading Out-of-Home media company. They specialise in engaging audiences for leading brands and are at the very forefront of interactive outdoor advertising; owning space on billboards, buses and the rail network.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The day started off with an insightful tour of the impressive Exterion Media Offices in Holborn, where the students learnt a lot about the different range of departments that all have their own responsibilities, yet work together to help make the company so successful. They then had the opportunity to interview each of the volunteers who had very kindly come along for the whole day to help out the teams. The teams were then set their challenge for the day: to fill three vacancies at Exterion Media: for a new cleaner, finance manager and receptionist. The 4 teams spent some time thinking about what skills and attributes would be needed for each role before carefully watching and reviewing a series of interviews and deciding as a team what their final hiring decision would be.

The Results:

There were some tough decisions to be made but eventually the teams were happy with their recruitment decisions. The Exterion Media employees were very impressed with the persuasive presentations the teams then delivered and felt that they had worked particularly well as teams to sift through the information and come to the best final decisions.

What they said:

  • “It’s been so difficult to pick just one skill for their certificate because they have all demonstrated so may today – Teacher, St John & St James CE Primary School
  • “They are walking away from today proud of themselves and that is reflected in us – I’m proud of what we have achieved today, it’s nice to feel like you’ve given something back” – Volunteer, Exterion Media
  • “For them to have this experience at this age is incredible, it’s something I never got to do when I was their age.” – Volunteer, Exterion Media
  • “I’m proud that we tried so hard to choose the right person for the job because this was a really big opportunity actually – I never knew you could work in a place like this” – Student, St John & St James
  • “The hardest part was standing up there at the front because I was a little bit scared but my team helped me to stay positive” – Student, St John & St James
  • “It makes me happy when I see the adverts and posters on the tube and now I know where they come from” – Student, St John & St James
  • “I am proud of trying my best and never giving up” – Student, St John & St James

Thanks to Exterion Media for such a great trip day, and to Year 3 from St John & St James CE Primary School for coming along.
