It was a great pleasure to welcome Year 10 students from Heartlands Academy in Birmingham to the PwC offices. Together with Enabling Enterprise, Heartlands have built on their longstanding relationship with the global accountancy firm to develop the PwC Young Business Ambassadors Programme.

Following a rigorous selection process, 15 trailblazing students were selected. As well as following the accredited EE Core Programme, students would benefit from the regular input of PwC mentors in developing their in-school projects as well as CV and interview workshops.

The visit to the PwC was a major milestone for the students. Following a rapid game of Zip Zap Boing, the main task of the day was explained. Working in small teams, students needed to design and build a prototype bridge and pitch their designs to a panel judges. To accomplish this task, teams had to trade resources with each other and demonstrate great organisation.

Three distinct prototypes began to take shape as students hurried to complete the task within the tight deadlines. With mentors contributing both their management expertise and their manual skills, all three bridges stood completed in time for the final whistle. It was time to focus on the final pitch.

The students’ hard work and willingness to take on board the advice of their mentors was evident as teams stood up to give confident, planned and passionate presentations. After asking some probing questions, the judges left to deliberate who would take the winning spot. The decision was tough one as each team received great feedback from their mentors. Ultimately the winning spot would fall to Apollo 3 for their great all-round performance. Well done to them and to everyone who took part!

At the end there was a special treat in store for the students as they were taken on a guided tour of the PwC building. This was an enlightening experience which re-enforced the importance of collaboration and teamwork and heighted the many different career routes within the firm.

Thanks to their great team spirit and professional conduct, Heartlands students were a pleasure to work with. A big thank you to them and special thanks to PwC mentors Laura, James and Fiona for their time and enthusiasm in organising the day and making it such a success.
