The School: Friern Barnet School

Friern Barnet School in Barnet have been working with Enabling Enterprise for several years to develop their students’ enterprise skills. Already this year, Year 9 took part in “A Day in Politics” Challenge Day where they took on the roles of politicians and used their Working in a Team and Presenting skills to set up their own political party. Today it was the turn of Year 8 to test their enterprise skills in the “Chocolate Challenge” where they also needed to use their Working in a Team skills as well as their Creativity.

The Challenge: Chocolate Challenge

The Chocolate Challenge was set: working in teams, the Year 8 students had to reverse the fortunes of a failing chocolate company. To do this, they were tasked with developing a new box of chocolates aimed at the teenage market. This gave students the opportunity to explore different careers in marketing and product development, as well as applying their Problem Solving skills and Creativity to a real-world scenario.

The Results:

Throughout the day it was great to see students working so effectively in their teams and encouraging their team mates whilst creating their chocolate box prototype. The day ended with each Year 8 team presenting their new chocolate box back to their class and teacher-judge and it was brilliant to see some really confident and persuasive presenting as well as some very imaginative design ideas!

What they said:

  • ” The day’s been really good for them to have the opportunity to focus on improving their teamwork and listening skills.” – Teacher, Year 8
  • ” We helped the team by listening carefully to each other’s’ ideas and then building on them to make them even better.” – Student, Year 8

Well done to everyone who was involved.

  • Business Trip: Friern Barnet School at Societe Generale in London « Enabling Enterprise Education May 17, 2018

[...] Friern Barnet School is in its sixth year working with Enabling Enterprise. Back in school, students have been busy developing a set of eight Essential Skills by completing a series of Challenge Days, for example recently when they planned for a brand new human colony on a distant planet. Students over the years have also had the opportunity to take part in several employer visits to top businesses across London in order to stretch their essential skills outside the classroom, so today’s trip was a fantastic opportunity for students from Year 9 to put their Staying Positive and Problem Solving skills to the test as they were supported by professional business volunteers.
