The School: The Winns Primary School

The Winns Primary School is an Enabling Enterprise partner school in Waltham Forest. Students have been working on their enterprise skills in several Lesson-Time Projects as well as whole-school Challenge Day. Last month for example, students created their own political parties as part of ‘A Day in Politics’ and ran for election. Today’s trip was an opportunity for 30 Year 5 students to put all of these skills to the test inside a top UK business.

The Business: Argos, London

Argos is a British catalogue retailer operating in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The company trades in over 750 physical stores, as well as online. With around 800 million website visits a year, it is one of the largest high street retailers online in the United Kingdom. Today was the very first time that the Argos ‘Dark Hub’ in Highams Park store has hosted an Enabling Enterprise visit. The hub is only one of its kind in the UK – it supplies Argos stores all across London and sends out orders to digital customers. Students were joined by a team of volunteers who were able to explain what it’s like to work at the only catalogue retailer in the UK!

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The Year 5 students worked in teams to learn about the role of Human Resources with the support of volunteers from Argos. They were then set the task of recruiting new staff members to join departments within an expanding organisation, meaning it was vital to focus on Problem Solving and Leading as they were challenged to take part in the fast paced aptly named – Recruitment Race.

The Results:

After discussing characteristics of a ‘perfect employee’, the teams took a tour of the Argos store to see where the potential candidates would be working. Then after learning about the different roles, they used Listening Carefully skills to find out more about the job applicants and to work successfully with each other. There were some tough decisions to be made but eventually the teams were happy with their recruitment decisions. The Argos employees were very impressed with the persuasive presentations the teams then delivered

What they said:

  • “This was a well organised day with lots of interesting activities and plenty of opportunities for students to practice teamwork.” – Teacher, The Winns Primary School
  • “Supporting the students today has been a lot of fun! A very different challenge and great to see all students standing up and speaking at the end – this is a very important skills which takes practice.” – Volunteer, Argos
  • “My favourite part was the tour, I learned lots about Argos and about recruiting people” – Student, The Winns Primary School

Thanks to Argos for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from The Winns Primary School for coming along.
