The School: Southern Road Primary School

Southern Road Primary School in Newham are a long-standing partner of Enabling Enterprise. They have been expertly developing eight core enterprise skills inside the classroom through a range of Lesson-Time Projects and whole-school Challenge Days. They have also put those skills to the test outside the classroom on several business visits to employers across London. However, today the students from Year 1 through to Year 6 were called on to put these enterprise skills to the test as the EE Team had to break some shocking news to them…

The Challenge: Crime Scene

In a special assembly, the children learned that ‘The Sugar Snatcher’ had struck again: a criminal targeting schools across the country, stealing all the chocolate and sweet supplies from school kitchens and cupboards! Southern Road were the latest to fall victim to this terrible crime and urgent help was needed to identify the culprit. Fortunately, the new police recruits from Southern Road Primary were up for the job. Working together, they collected and analysed evidence, stretched their Problem Solving skills and focused on Staying Positive as their investigation took shape.

The Results:

Throughout the day, it was brilliant to see students of all ages making links between what they already knew about the suspects and the clues they were presented with, in order to close in on their prime suspect. Once they were sure of their decisions, the enterprising detective teams stood up in front of their classes and presented their verdict to the case officer, using key evidence to Share Ideas in justifying their decision and showcasing the skills they had used all day. They put together some fantastic evidence boards, working under tight deadlines but still Aiming High. Just as the teams were proudly totalling up the points they had earned for all the skills they showed off in the challenge, the day culminated with a shock confession from one of the suspects. Case closed!

What they said:

  • “They have been really engaged all day, even break time! It’s made them think a lot and they’ve had to work in their teams which has been driving them on.” – Teacher, Year 3
  • “We solved the case because we listened to all the clues and worked in a team. We didn’t give up and worked really hard… all day!” – Student, Year 1
  • “One group in particular has really impressed me with how they’ve worked together. I thought that one member would dominate, but even the quietest has got involved throughout the challenge. I think the story of the day has made it much more engaging for him.” – Teacher, Year 2
  • “We all had different ideas because there was so much evidence. Then we worked as a whole team to make our decision.” – Student, Year 6
  • Well done to all the students and adults for joining forces on this investigation and successfully cracking the case!
