The School: Chase Side Primary School

Chase Side Primary School, in Enfield, have been working with Enabling Enterprise for 4 years and took part in a whole school Future Transport Challenge Day just last week! The Year 5 students who made the trip into the City of London today were from different classes and therefore had the additional challenge of working with different people as they continued to use and develop all of their enterprise skills. In particular, they had to think of many different strategies to approach Problem Solving and students reflected on when they had used these in other projects or classroom activities in the past.

The Business: Societe Generale, London

Societe Generale is a large European Bank and a major Financial Services company with a global presence. As an organisation they are able to give excellent insight into the working environment in a multi-national company, within the financial sector. Today, four volunteers were introduced to the Chase Side students who interviewed them and learned more about possible roles within the company.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

After interviewing the volunteers and having a tour of the trading floor, the Chase Side students began the day by learning about the Stock Exchange before taking on the role of Stock Market Traders. The trading teams, including Chase Champions and Money Makers, were introduced to their client who asked them to wisely invest an initial £25,000 on her behalf. Each group used their Listening Carefully skills and made notes on their client’s needs before conducting research on four companies they could potentially invest in.

The Results:

As the day progressed, the teams were Sharing Ideas about the different companies and the information they’d heard about the volatile stock market. With support from Societe Generale volunteers, the teams were able to complete three separate trades before calculating the return they had successfully made for their client. There were many occasions where Staying Positive was crucial to the work of each team and the students reflected on the importance of this skill in each of their groups. At the end of the day, each team presented their results using persuasive language and highlighted how they had used Problem Solving to make group decisions and an overall return.

What they said:

  • “They gave great explanations for the decisions they made through problem solving.” – Teacher, Chase Side Primary School
  • “Some of their questions were very creative and all of the students were trying to get involved.” – Volunteer, Societe Generale
  • “I’m really proud that our group worked well together because we don’t normally talk to each other at school.” – Year 5 Student, Chase Side Primary School

Thanks to Societe Generale for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Chase Side Primary School for coming along.
