The School: Oasis Academy Woodview

Oasis Academy Woodview have worked with Enabling Enterprise for 4 years and students are always keen to demonstrate the enterprise skills developed in their Lesson-Time Projects and Challenge Days in school, or when out to employer visits. So it was a keen and eager group of year 5 students who made their way to Carillion’s base at Paradise Circus Birmingham for their Brilliant Builds Challenge.

The Business: Carillion, Birmingham

Carillion plc is a British multinational construction services company. Working in the UK as well as Canada, the Middle East and the Caribbean, Carillion employs over 46,000 workers.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

After the students were shown the Carillion Paradise Circus construction site in the centre of Birmingham, they were put into teams to take on the Brilliant Build enterprise challenge. Working in a Team, the challenge for the students was to redevelop a brownfield site in the town of Bogsby and create a space that would meet the needs of the local people and benefit the environment. Before Sharing Ideas and deciding what they were going to construct, they learned about the needs of the people of Bogsby and had to think carefully about what was essential and what was desirable to have in the town. After creating a plan of the buildings on the site, the teams then ended the day by presenting their ideas to each other as well as the judges from Carillion.

The Results:

The three judges from Carillion were impressed with the Year 5 students’ ideas and confidence in their presentations. The teams had thought carefully about the wants and needs of the community, hoping to please as many people as possible whist learning about how to come to a compromise when the needs of the community were different. Their Staying Positive skills were tested throughout the day and the students made some useful reflections on how they would tackle a task like this again in the future.

What they said:

  • “Some of the children have really surprised me…they have worked positively with others in their teams and have been totally focussed on the challenge. It’s been a great experience for them.” – Teacher, Oasis Academy Woodview
  • “The teams impressed me with their great ideas. Their team work developed during the day and some of the quieter children are now communicating much more confidently. I’d love to volunteer with Enabling Enterprise again.” – Volunteer, Carillion
  • “We stayed positive in the morning when we could see other teams getting more enterprise points than us. We worked well together to get lots more points on the scoreboard. It was exciting!” – Student, Oasis Academy Woodview

Thanks to Carillion for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 students and staff from Oasis Academy Woodview for coming along.
