The School: William Tyndale Primary

A long-standing partner of Enabling Enterprise, William Tyndale have several years’ experience of developing the all-important enterprise skills in their students. Last academic year for example, they came up with amazing plans to set up a brand new human colony on a distant moon. With Listening Carefully as their skill of the month, these Year 3 students were very keen to show off how enterprising they could be in the real world of work.

The Business: Hammerson, London

Founded in 1942, Hammerson plc is a major British property development and investment company. A FTSE 100 company with a portfolio of retail property in the UK and France of around £7.7 billion, including 22 prime shopping centres, 22 convenient retail parks and investments in 15 premium designer outlet villages. These include the Bullring in Birmingham, Westquay in Southampton and Brent Cross in London.

The Challenge: Retail Revelations

Through a challenge focussed on creativity and teamwork, the children had to work hard to come up with original ideas to bring even more customers flooding to a new shopping centre. Having learnt that these centres are not just about shopping, the children had to think about what else could draw in potential customers. Gaining inspiration from their tour through the offices of Hammerson and a look at previous developments some of the Hammerson volunteers had worked on, the children had to apply their imaginative minds to design something completely new.

The Results:

The students excelled at demonstrating their enterprise skills. They impressed with their original ideas and use of imagination, were great at working together in their teams and Listening Carefully to each other in their design activities and wowed the panel of Hammerson volunteer judges in the presentation stage. A very strong performance all day!

What they said:

  • “I think the children gained a lot from learning about new career choices and having the opportunity to design a shopping centre based on the info provided by the current employees. It was a fantastic day!” – Teacher, William Tyndale
  • “I’m not the kind of person that’s used to working with children, but today has been a fantastic experience. I really did enjoy it! It’s a really productive time for both the adults and the children. And I would love for the grown-ups to do such activities. Also, I really liked that the skills were really tangible for the kids. You guys have designed this really well.” – Volunteer, Hammerson
  • “My day was made when one of the children said to me: ‘Thank you for having us and for giving us such a nice day!’ ” – Volunteer, Hammerson
  • “We were aiming high because we were trying to include lots of creative and imaginative sculptures in our shopping centre.” – Student, William Tyndale
  • “We were staying positive when we accepted everyone’s ideas in our team.” – Student, William Tyndale
  • “Close your eyes and imagine you are walking on water… Have you ever had such an amazing experience? If not, you should come to our futuristic shopping centre!” – Student, William Tyndale

Thanks to Hammerson for such a great trip day, and to Year 3 from William Tyndale Primary School for coming along.
