The School: Chingford CoE Primary

Chingford Primary have been working with Enabling Enterprise for the last few years. For Year 5 at this was their first taste of enterprise. Back at school Year 5 will be putting their skills to the test on the Chocolate Challenge Day in March.

The Business: Argos, Leytonstone

Argos is a British catalogue retailer operating in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The company trades in over 750 physical stores, as well as online. With around 800 million website visits a year, it is one of the largest high street retailers online in the United Kingdom. To read why Argos is working with Enabling Enterprise please, click here.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

Having interviewed their volunteer helpers from Argos students got a behind the scenes tour of the store meeting a number of staff along the route through the storage space. Back in meeting room, the Year 5 students worked in teams to hone their ability in two of the key enterprise skills with the support of volunteers from Argos. The students learnt about the role of Human Resources and were set the task of recruiting new staff members to join departments within an expanding organisation, meaning it was vital to focus on Problem Solving and Leading as they were challenged to take part in the fast paced aptly named – Recruitment Race.

The Results:

The enthusiasm and focus on Chingford students was clear from the start. They took in a lot of information on the store tour and demonstrated fantastic Working in a Team to ensure all team members had the opportunity to speak. When it came to making recruitment decisions, team leaders employed different strategies: some discussed the pros and cons of each individual candidate as a team while others delegated out the three vacancies to split up the workload.

From listening to the final presentations, it was clear students have thought very carefully about their appointments and made some insightful decisions. Student also demonstrated Aiming High and Staying positive – many students reflected that presenting did not come naturally to them but nevertheless they all stood up and spoke with confidence to explain their decisions.

Well done to all the teams who took part!

What they said:

  • “The progress students have made today has been fantastic! They have all got so much out of it and I’ve not seen some of them present the way they did today” – Teacher, Chingford CoE Primary
  • “It’s been a great opportunity for children to meet and be involved with people who work in business. Very encouraging for children and grown-ups!” – Teacher, Chingford CoE Primary
  • “It’s been so much fun! The challenge stretched the children and the progress especially on confidence has been amazing. I also feel we have also learned a lot as volunteers – helping people develop is a part of my role and helping children to develop their skills is has been a useful experience.” – Volunteer, Argos
  • “It’s been inspirational! I liked the tour and I learned that it’s very hard to employ people” – Student, Chingford CoE Primary

Thanks to Argos for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Chingford CoE Primary for coming along.
