The School: Moorthorpe Primary School

Moorthorpe are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise and invited a selection of Year 4, 5 and 6 students to test their Enterprise Skills at NG Bailey, Leeds. Travelling from a small village on the edge of Wakefield’s district, the students were clearly excited to be arriving at a business based so close to Leeds’ city centre. Building on from the Enterprise projects carried in the previous term, the Year 5 and 6 students were keen to exercise their eight challenge skills once again alongside the five business volunteers.

The Business: Ng Bailey, Leeds

NG Bailey are the UK’s largest engineering, IT and facilities services firm. A family owned company, NG Bailey has been operating for over 90 years and currently employs over 2,500 people across the UK and Europe.

Following an introduction to engineering, Moorthorpe students displayed excellent Listening Carefully skills as they interviewed five NG Bailey volunteers about their varied roles and how they used the eight Enterprise Skills. Students were also given a tour of the Leeds office and got a taste of how the mechanical and electrical systems inside hospitals and universities were designed and costed.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

Putting their own skills to the test, students were set the challenge of designing a new development to occupy a brownfield site in the town of Bogsby. To succeed, students had to research the needs of the community and apply their imagination, problem solving and sharing ideas skills to create a 3D representation of their idea.

The Results:

Teams raced against the clock to complete, resource and create their designs. For example, the ‘Moorthorpe Community Construction’ team combined sports, family and youth facilities in a multipurpose building surrounded by parklands, while the ‘Bogsy Community Engineers’ prioritised education with their super- eco-friendly school and café combination.

With designs complete, each team worked hard to polish their persuasive pitch for the judges.

Despite a split decision, the Moorthorpe Community Re-Development Team took the winning sport by just a couple of points, thanks to their enthusiasm and salesmanship in presenting. However, all teams developed significantly in their eight Enterprise Skills and gave the Sustainability Director an insight into the calibre of potential future NG Bailey employees.
