The School: Priestmead Primary School

Priestmead Primary School in Harrow, North London are an Enabling Enterprise partner school. This means that students take part in projects throughout the year, all focused on developing enterprise skills such as Leading and Problem Solving. Last term the whole school did this brilliantly on a Crime Scene investigation. Today, twenty lucky students from Year 5 travelled out to top business Oliver Wyman in Baker Street to apply their skills to a new challenge.

The Business: Oliver Wyman, London

Oliver Wyman and the team of professionals brought the world of Management Consultancy to life as they launched the teams of students on a challenge to turn around the current problems of United Jetways. Before the students became Management Consultants themselves it was essential that they first interview the real professionals to find out more about their jobs.

The Challenge: High Fliers

The children were set the challenge of creating a marketing campaign and an in-flight magazine for United Jetways in order to improve the finances of the struggling airline. Teams left their student identities and became Management Consultants with company names such as ‘Courageous Consultants’, ‘Marvellous Management’ and ‘Oliverchievers’.

They first identified target audiences from families to business people and students to elderly people. From this moment on it was clear that we were working with teams of creative consultants as their ideas to drum up sales included posters with eye-catching images and superb slogans. Management Consultants new and old were clear that the key was to ask lots of questions and to really target their markets in order to solve problems of existing companies. For example, teams targeting families included special offers such as free ice cream for kids.

The Results:

There were fantastic ideas from all the teams, with slogans such as ‘You’ll Never Forget This Flight’. It was clear that the new Management Consultants had understood their project brief and were able to speak to their target audiences in order to improve the airline company. The day culminated in presentations to the panel of judges from Oliver Wyman to see who had met the brief successfully, and the children not only demonstrated fantastic creativity, but also team work and maturity in delivering their presentations.

What they said:

  • “You’ve really made me proud today” – Teacher, Priestmead Primary School
  • “Their team work really came along and they tackled the maths problems really well together.” – Volunteer, Oliver Wyman
  • “I’m proud of my team for giving a great presentation!” – Student, Priestmead Primary School

Thanks to Oliver Wyman for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Priestmead Primary School for coming along.
