The School: Priory Primary School, Dudley

Year 5 students from Priory Primary School in Dudley are in their second year of Enabling Enterprise programmes. They have been developing eight core enterprise skills through Lesson-Time Projects as well as whole-school Challenge Days. Those students still remember Operation Moonbase where they had to build a whole new civilisation from scratch, and so they came well-equipped on this employer trip to stretch their enterprise skills once more, this time in the real world of work.

The Business: Bouygues UK, Birmingham

Bouygues UK through its subsidiary Thomas Vale delivers award-winning construction, development and regeneration projects to the most exacting standards across public and commercial private sectors. Bouygues UK have offices and sites across the UK and draws on the heritage and support of the French group Bouygues, which operates in over 80 countries spanning construction, civil works, energy, services, telecommunications and media.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

The Priory students embarked on the challenge of Using Imagination and Working in a Team to design and create a new building in the town of ‘Bogsby’, a brownfield site they were to regenerate. They used their Leading skills throughout the challenge and and kept Problem Solving to incorporate the community’s wants and needs, as well as ensuring their new building was environmentally friendly.

The Results:

The day culminated with students pitching their idea to the judges. Not only did they use excellent presentation skills, but also the quality of their Listening Carefully was evident when sharing each other’s ideas. It was fantastic to see all teams from Priory Primary Staying Positive and truly Aiming High when they faced challenges such as agreeing on a design for the building. At the end of the day, everyone was pleased with the imaginative team decisions they had reached!

What they said:

  • “The children were engaged all day. Having the activity at a construction company really made it real for the children and gave them a great insight into a working business.” – Teacher, Priory Primary School
  • “I enjoyed showing the children what everyday life is like and that the skills they have are so important later in life.” – Volunteer, Bouygues
  • “I have loved planning out my ideas and I’m proud of how my team listened to each other.” – Student, Priory Primary School

Thanks to Bouygues for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Priory Primary School for coming along.
