The School: Holly Park Primary School

Based in Barnet in North London, Holly Park Primary School are a Partner Primary school with Enabling Enterprise and have been developing their students’ Enterprise skills for three years. The Year 6 students who visited Argos today have previously investigated crime scenes and created new societies for a Moonbase. They were very well equipped to approach today’s challenges by Working in a Team and Problem Solving.

The Business: Argos Holloway, London

Argos is a British catalogue retailer which trades in over 750 physical stores, as well as online. With around 800 million website visits a year, it is one of the largest high street retailers online in the United Kingdom. The volunteers from the team at Holloway included experienced managers, inspirational team leaders and aspiring assistants who were all able to explain what it’s like to work at the only catalogue retailer in the UK!

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The Year 6 students worked in teams to hone their ability in two of the key enterprise skills with the support of volunteers from Argos. The students learnt about the role of Human Resources and were set the task of recruiting new staff members to join departments within an expanding organisation, meaning it was vital to focus on Problem Solving and Leading as they were challenged to take part in the fast paced aptly named – Recruitment Race.

The Results:

After creating a ‘perfect employee’ specification, the teams took a tour of the Argos store to see where the potential candidates would be working. Then after learning about the different roles, they listened carefully to the job applicants. The teams realised that they must not only listen carefully to the applicants but also each other. There were some tough decisions to be made but eventually the teams were happy with their recruitment decisions. The Argos employees were very impressed with the persuasive presentations the teams then delivered. Ensuring they were including plenty of detail and reasoning for their decisions.

What they said:

  • “We have enjoyed watching some of our children with challenging behaviour succeed, stay on task and enjoy themselves!” – Teacher, Holly Park Primary School
  • “The presentations were great and some of them really surprised us with their confidence” – Volunteer, Argos – Holloway
  • “We found it tricky to choose the most suitable candidate and I learnt that we need to listen to everyone’s opinions before coming to a final decision” – Student, Holly Park Primary School

Thanks to Argos – Holloway for such a great trip day, and to Years 6 from Holly Park Primary School for coming along.
