The School: Heartlands Academy

Heartlands Academy are now in their sixth year of Enabling Enterprise programmes and have been developing their enterprise skills both in school and out through a range of business trips, challenge days and lesson time projects. Today’s teams of Year 8 students were specially selected to show off their Working in a Team and Problem Solving skills in the real world of work.

The Business: PwC, Birmingham

PricewaterhouseCoopers is the world’s largest professional services firm, providing advice and support for businesses in anything from taxes to dealing with climate change. They have a wide range of clients, including, Debenhams, Tesco, Samsung, Sony and Barclays. They also oversee the balloting process for the Oscars!

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

Students were set the challenge of becoming stock market traders where they learned about taking calculated risks and dealing with set-backs. Using their enterprise skills, in particular, Staying Positive and Problem Solving, students were tasked with investing money into different companies and deciding which companies would provide the best return in shares. They then eagerly waited for their stock market update to see if they had chosen the right companies to invest in and whether they made or lost any money!

The Results:

Trading was successful for teams, who not only had satisfied clients, but also managed to pick themselves up by Staying Positive and Working in a Team through the set-backs the students faced. Some fantastic Leading skills also emerged as teammates encouraged each other throughout the day. The day ended with each team presenting their day’s trading to their client in front of a panel of important judges from PwC, explaining and justifying their choices and risk-taking strategy with Dr Taylor’s money!

What they said:

  • “Enabling Enterprise trips are always so well structured and organised. The students really enjoyed the experience.” – Teacher, Heartlands Academy
  • “The tasks were very varied and students really bought into it. They were able to speak up when they disagreed with their team.” – Volunteer, PwC
  • “This helped me to never give up without giving it my best shot.” – Student, Heartlands Academy
  • “The experience has helped me talk to different people.” – Student, Heartlands Academy

Thanks to PwC for such a great trip day, and to Year 8 from Heartlands Academy for coming along.
