The School: President Kennedy School

President Kennedy School, Coventry, working with Enabling Enterprise for 3 years now are always keen to provide their students with an opportunity to learn and experience enterprise education outside of the classroom. And so, it was a small group of Year 8 Students, along with Head of Business Studies, Helen Petrak who made their way to IBM Warwick, to take part in a special Enabling Enterprise Challenge.

The Business: IBM Warwick

IBM, founded in 1911, is one of the most famous information technology companies in the world, with operations in 170 different countries and over 380,000 employees globally. It now focuses on generating innovative solutions for business problems and is a major research organisation, constantly evolving and innovating.

The Challenge: Tech-Xperts

Tech-Xperts highlights how computers communicate through algorithms and this is then related to communication in the workplace. Students, with the support of IBM volunteers were encouraged to identify potential barriers faced when communicating with colleagues and clients. Given their brief to design an app to aid communication for employees at the business – students had not a second to spare as they worked towards presenting their creative, solution focussed ideas to IBM Experts.

The Results:

The Year 8 students did not waste a moment – keen from the off to find out all they could about IBM and the work of volunteers Robert Clancy, a Technical Sales Specialist and Cassia Edwards, an Intern Security Analyst. Questions relating to the business itself, their specific jobs, possible career paths and qualifications needed, along with the essential skills required to work at IBM were explored and a tour of the work place ensured all students had a flavour of life as an ‘IBMer’. Armed with so much information, the students were keen to then get creative – and came up with new app ideas to aid communication not only between employees within the IBM Warwick premises, but also for those working remotely from home and across the world in different time zones.

What they said:

  • “I am so proud of our work today. I surprised myself – I really enjoyed putting our presentation together and sharing our app ideas. It was great to work at IBM for the day.” – Student, President Kennedy School
  • “Another excellent day out in the workplace with Enabling Enterprise. Our students have made the most of this outstanding opportunity. Thank you.” – Helen Petrak, Head of Business Studies, President Kennedy School
  • ” I had a great experience volunteering and supporting the brilliant work that Enabling Enterprise do. The day was very enjoyable and I got a great deal of pleasure seeing the students applying their skills and knowledge to the challenges. The students from President Kennedy were a delight and pleasure to work with…all engaged in the tasks at hand. They should be very proud of their achievements. I will certainly volunteer again with Enabling Enterprise and I would encourage others to do the same. A very rewarding experience. “– Rob Clancy, Technical Sales Specialist, IBM.

Thanks to IBM Warwick for such a great trip day, and to the Year 8 Students from President Kennedy School for coming along.
