The School: Pinner Park Junior School

Based in Harrow, Pinner Park Junior School have been working with Enabling Enterprise to develop their students’ Enterprise Skills since 2015. All students have been expanding their understanding of these skills through a range of projects and enjoyed the Greetings Card Challenge in the Autumn term. Today, students from Year 6 had the opportunity to apply their skills to a new set of challenges in an exciting business context.

The Business: BBC Worldwide in London

BBC Worldwide is the main commercial department of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The business exists to support the BBC’s public service mission and to maximise profits on its behalf. They do this through investing in, commercialising and showcasing content from the BBC around the world, in a way that is consistent with BBC standards and values. BBC Worldwide also build the reach and reputation of the BBC brand overseas and champion British creativity.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The Year 6 students worked in teams to hone their ability in two of the key enterprise skills with the support of volunteers from BBC Worldwide. The students learnt about the role of Human Resources and were set the task of recruiting new staff members to join departments within an expanding organisation, meaning it was vital to focus on Problem Solving and Leading as they were challenged to take part in the fast paced aptly named – Recruitment Race.

The Results:

Each of the teams learned about the many different roles involved in the operation of an organisation, using their Problem Solving and Listening Carefully skills to identify key information. They negotiated effectively to nominate their choice of candidate for each vacancy and ended the day by clearly articulating their decisions and how they overcame challenges during the activities. The volunteers were overwhelmed by the quality of presentations and particularly noted the clear and persuasive language used by the students.

What they said:

  • “I was impressed by the pace of the different activities and the progression through development of skills and understanding.” – Teacher, Pinner Park Junior School
  • “The students were able to resolve differences in their team and were very respectful of each other’s opinions.” – Volunteer, BBC Worldwide
  • ”My favourite part of the day was deciding and presenting the candidates and having a tour of the building.” – Student, Pinner Park Junior School

Thanks to BBC Worldwide for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from Pinner Park Junior School for coming along.
