The Schools: North Harringay Primary, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary, St John Vianney RC Primary, St Martin of Porres Primary, Trinity Primary Academy and Wilbury Primary

The six primary schools from Enfield and Haringey were very excited to put their enterprise skills to the test on an exciting competition trip to Brewin Dolphin where they particularly focused on Problem Solving and Staying Positive.

The Business: Brewin Dolphin, London

Brewin Dolphin is one of the UK’s leading providers of personalised, discretionary wealth management services, offering investment management and financial planning services to investors and intermediaries. With origins dating back to the mid-18th century, they were one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. They have 28 offices throughout the UK & Ireland and have a wealth of experience dealing with investment markets.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

Before receiving their challenge, the students were very lucky to meet and get the chance to quiz five Brewin Dolphin employees to find out more about their jobs and which skills they had to use every day in their work. The teams were then set their challenge: they were to become traders for the day and Dr Taylor, their client, was about to give them £25,000 which they had to invest for her in four potential companies. The teams did a fantastic job of using their Working in a Team and Problem Solving skills to try and work out which companies were more likely to be successful based on the information they had been given.

The Results:

In the afternoon, each trading team prepared and delivered a fantastic presentation back to the Brewin Dolphin employees explaining how and why they had invested Dr Taylor’s money. The judging panel were very impressed with how confidently each team shared their ideas but also by how well they had worked in a team and stayed positive throughout the day, even when some of the teams had lost some money!

What they said:

  • “I’m going to award you the problem-solving certificate because you’ve done an excellent job as a team today about finding out extra information in order to solve the problem!” – Teacher, Wilbury Primary School
  • “Really excellent teamwork in this team with everyone contributing ideas and checking that everyone agrees before making a decision.” – Volunteer, Brewin Dolphin
  • “We’ve really used problem-solving today and the key has been to work together to solve problems when they are really hard.” – Student, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School
  • “We have had to really use staying positive skills today, especially when we lost money but we knew if we worked together we could get it back!” – Student, North Harringay Primary School

Thanks to Brewin Dolphin for such a great trip day, and to Years 4, 5 and 6 from North Harringay Primary, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary, St John Vianney RC Primary, St Martin of Porres Primary, Trinity Primary Academy and Wilbury Primary for coming along.
