The Schools: Foresters Primary and Darrick Wood Junior Schools

Foresters Primary in Sutton, South London has been working with Enabling Enterprise since 2013. Their Year 5 students are lucky enough to do three lesson-time projects across the year and each class go on an exciting trip to a top business in Central London. Today, it was the turn of 10 lucky students to join mixed-age students from Darrick Wood Junior at a top international law firm. Both schools have had an opportunity to apply their Problem Solving skills in a crime-related challenge before, so being in the legal sector today, they were really keen to put all their enterprise skills to the test once more in the real world of work.

The Business: Freshfields, London

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP is a leader among international law firms and is a member of the Magic Circle of elite British law firms. Founded in 1743, it is a multinational law firm head-quartered in London, providing business law advice of the highest quality throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the US.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

Students professionally introduced themselves to their Freshfields volunteers, and were keen to show they were Aiming High in all aspects of today’s challenge. An insightful tour of the fantastic premises, including incredible views on the city’s skyline, confirmed how enthusiastic the aspiring entrepreneurs were. It was no surprise then that they accepted their challenge for the day with gusto: to become law firms and negotiate on behalf of their clients. Each team was assigned a client and their case file to read through. By using Problem Solving and Sharing Ideas, each would-be law firm was able to record the most helpful arguments for their case with support from their Freshfields volunteers.

The Results:

By the afternoon, every team had thought about a sensible compromise to offer their opposition in the hope of reaching a fair agreement. There was a buzz of excitement as each team began preparing for their negotiation, which was to be carried out in a thriving meeting room with simultaneous live discussions. With some further advice from Freshfields volunteers, the students practised to ensure they were covering all of their most persuasive arguments. The opposing teams then faced each other to attempt to settle on a fair compromise within limited time. It wasn’t easy but all teams managed to agree on a compromise, which made the Freshfields judges’ task very tricky when it came to picking which team had just the edge over the others.

What they said:

  • “A fantastic challenge, engaging and developing the children’s language skills. A fantastic host company too – truly inspirational for Aiming High!” – Teacher, Darrick Wood
  • “The structure of the day was very clear and supported the children in developing the EE skills. An excellent day where children had a positive experience mixing with the other school. They also gained an experience in the world of work that they would never have had without EE.” – Headteacher, Foresters
  • “You had great ideas when you were negotiating with the other side: that was excellent!” – Volunteer, Freshfields
  • “I liked how EE made this understandable to both children and adults. Plus, I felt I had enough time to talk to the children. I liked the whole thing – I can’t think of anything I didn’t like!” – Volunteer, Freshfields
  • “It was very special to have the volunteers with us today: thank you!” – Parent, Darrick Wood
  • “We didn’t just go with our first idea: we really thought through our arguments.” – Student, Foresters
  • “I always wanted to be a journalist or a lawyer, but I decided I wanted to be a lawyer from today.” – Student, Darrick Wood

Thanks to Freshfields for such a great trip day, and to Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 from Foresters Primary and Darrick Wood Junior School for coming along.
