The School: Southern Road Primary School

Southern Road Primary School in Newham are a long-standing partner of Enabling Enterprise. They have been expertly developing eight core enterprise skills inside the classroom through a range of Lesson-Time Projects and whole-school Challenge Days. They have also put those skills to the test outside the classroom on several business visits to employers across London. Today was the chance for Year 6 students to shine once more, this time in the legal sector.

The Business: Nabarro, London

Nabarro LLP is an international law firm head-quartered in London with origins dating back to the 1950s. Nabarro employs over 800 staff across offices in London, Sheffield, Manchester, Brussels, Singapore and Dubai. Today a range of employees from various departments at Nabarro were on hand to help the aspiring lawyers build their case. Let’s see how they got on.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

Students professionally introduced themselves to their Nabarro volunteers, and were keen to show they were Aiming High in all aspects of today’s challenge. An insightful tour of the fantastic premises, including incredible views on the city’s skyline, confirmed how enthusiastic the aspiring entrepreneurs were. It was no surprise then that they accepted their challenge for the day with gusto: to become law firms and negotiate on behalf of their clients. Each team was assigned a client and their case file to read through. By using Problem Solving and Sharing Ideas, each would-be law firm was able to record the most helpful arguments for their case with support from their Nabarro volunteers.

The Results:

By the afternoon, every team had thought about a sensible compromise to offer their opposition in the hope of reaching a fair agreement. There was a buzz of excitement as each team began preparing for their negotiation, which was to be carried out in a thriving meeting room with simultaneous live discussions. With some further advice from the volunteers, the students practised to ensure they were covering all of their most persuasive arguments. The opposing teams then faced each other to attempt to settle on a fair compromise within limited time. It wasn’t easy but all teams managed to agree on a compromise, which made the Nabarro judges’ task very tricky when it came to picking which team had just the edge over the others.

What they said:

  • “Thank you for challenging our students and having high expectations of them – it was absolutely brilliant!” – Teacher, Southern Road
  • “This is such a great process for creativity – as well as being their first step into the professional world, it’s also a building block for their character.” – Volunteer, Nabarro
  • “I am proud of when we wrote down our ideas because I don’t usually share my ideas, but today I did.” – Student, Southern Road

Thanks to Nabarro for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from Southern Road Primary School for coming along.
