The School: Al-Furqan Primary School

Al-Furqan Primary School in Tyseley, Birmingham are working with Enabling Enterprise for the second year running. Keen to give their enterprising students the opportunity to utilise their developing skills on a workplace visit, an eager group of Year 4 students arrived at The University Hospital Birmingham, having already taken part in a successful Enterprise Challenge Day in school early this term.

The Business: University Hospital Birmingham

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is the leading university teaching hospital in the West Midlands and is one of the most consistently high-performing trusts in the NHS. Employing over 9000 people in over 500 different roles and treating in excess of 800,000 patients each year, the hospital is recognised as a leading centre with an international reputation for quality of care, IT, clinical training, research, as well as cancer care.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

As soon as the enterprising 8- and 9-year olds arrived they set to work – aiming to find out more about the hospital, the staff and the skills needed to work in one of the largest hospitals in Europe. Thanks to an extensive tour of the huge hospital, including a training ward and meeting different members of staff in different roles from Nursing Staff, to Housekeeping, to Learning and Development Managers, the focused students had many opportunities to ask and answer questions and quickly grew in confidence. They were able to see the enterprise skills in action throughout the hospital and were keen to use them for themselves too, especially on a stretching challenge where they would act as HR consultant on behalf of the hospital.

The Results:

The budding entrepreneurs used their Problem Solving effectively when recruiting new staff members for different departments within the hospital. The teams drew on what they had found out by Listening Carefully to the excellent volunteers and each other. As ideas were shared and recruitment decisions were made as a team, the children then clearly showed Aiming High as they presented the candidates they had shortlisted in front of a panel of judges.

What they said:

  • “This is just brilliant. Seeing them so engaged throughout the day and willing to work so well together. It’s been a great opportunity.” – Teacher, Al-Furqan Primary School
  • “Seeing how they have listened so carefully and been so motivated to complete the challenge has been excellent. The quieter children who grew in confidence in particular have stood out to me.” – Volunteer, University Hospital Birmingham
  • “I didn’t realise how many people worked here and how many different jobs were needing to be done in a hospital. I would like to be a doctor, or a nurse or maybe a paramedic!” – Student, Al-Furqan Primary School

Thanks to the volunteers from University hospital Birmingham for a super day and a great tour and to Year 4 from Al-Furqan Primary School and the staff for your energy all along.
