The Schools: Oriel Primary and Oak Hill Academy

Both Oriel Primary and Oak Hill Academy are located in the London borough of Hounslow. They are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise and students at both schools are keen to develop their enterprise skills through a range of projects, most notably the recent ‘Day in Politics‘ Challenge, which ran on the same day at both schools and proved hugely popular with students and teachers alike.

The Business: IBM, London

IBM is one of the most famous information technology companies in the world. It now focuses on generating innovative solutions for business problems far more than on producing hardware.

Volunteers from across the business came to lend a hand on the day, offering expert guidance and support to the students from Oriel and Oak Hill.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

The students spent the day working as part of the IBM Human Resources department. At the start of the day, IBM revealed they were looking to hire three highly-skilled candidates to fill vacancies in their workforce. After interviewing the volunteers and learning more about the various roles within IBM on a fabulous tour of the offices, the students set up their own recruitment firms to research and hire the best candidates for the jobs. The mixed teams needed to use their Problem Solving, Listening Carefully and Leading skills to research and understand the roles, before hiring the three best candidates. At the end of the day the IBM volunteers helped them to prepare for their presentation in front of the judging panel.

The Results:

Every team won a skill award for their work over the day, demonstrating how well they could put their enterprise skills to use. After the presentations, it was clear that the students all understood the skills and experience needed to act as a hiring agent!

What they said:

  • “The children were really able to challenge themselves today – they stepped out of their comfort zone and I know they feel proud of what they achieved as a team!” – Teacher, Oriel Academy
  • “I was so impressed by the language they used in their presentations, they were using words I don’t use!” – Volunteer, IBM
  • “We tried to persuade each other to our point of view and made decisions by voting on them.” – Student, Oak Hill

Thanks to IBM for such a great trip day, and to Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 from Oriel and Oak Hill for coming along.
