The School: Lander Road Primary School

Following the successes of their ‘Day in Politics’ Challenge Day, 15 children from Lander Road’s Year 5 had the fantastic opportunity to stretch their Enterprise Skills in a real-world, workplace environment. Leading and Sharing Ideas were the foci of the day as these excited yet determined, young people set off on a journey through the world of sustainable construction.

The Business: Royal HaskoningDHV, Manchester

Royal HaskoningDHV have been making a difference in people’s lives since 1881. They work throughout the world advising and managing engineering and construction projects which contribute to improving living circumstances of people and communities across the globe. As an expert in sustainability, Royal HaskoningDHV challenge themselves to focus on the environmental impact and safety of all of their projects including:
• Transport
• Power
• Urban Regeneration
• Industry
• Water

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

Royal HaskoningDHV’s values and services were well reflected in the day’s challenge. The children were asked to design and create a model for the redevelopment of a Brownfield site in the town of ‘Bogsby’. Thinking about the impact on the community as well as the environment, the children used skills such as Using Imagination and Working in a Team, to begin to create their team’s vision of a winning construction. Aiming High, the children began to create fantastic models and designs for their innovative projects, Problem Solving and Staying Positive as they faced more tasks and trails along the way.

The Results:

As the day progressed so did the skills of the children, with some becoming more confident to share their ideas within the groups and others becoming quieter and Listening Carefully to the rest of their team. The children’s performance during the presentations was exemplary, Using Imagination to create some fantastic plans and Sharing Ideas with confidence as they presented their finished projects. Teachers and volunteers were blown away by the focus and determination the children showed throughout the day, all finishing with a huge sense of achievement and a smile on their faces.

What they said:

  • “It’s been a fantastic opportunity to step back and observe the children in a different setting; they have done so well and the dynamics have changed throughout the day.” – Teacher, Lander Road
  • “It’s been great to have the kids in the office, they were so well behaved and their presentations were amazing” – Volunteer, Royal HaskoningDHV
  • “I was really proud of how well our team worked together. I’m going to work really hard in geography now because I want to do what Hugh does.” – Student, Lander Road

Thanks to Royal HaskoningDHV for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Lander Road for coming along.
