It was great to visit Reaside Junior School in the Frankley area of Birmingham on Thursday 24th November. Over the last two days, Year 6 students had completed our Maths and Enterprise Challenge. Students needed to launch a new brand of chocolate, complete with unique packaging, posters and an advert. Using their numeracy skills, teams had to get a sound grasp of their finances and interpret their market research.

I arrived just as the teams were adding the finishing touches to their final presentations and proudly took my seat on the judging panel accompanied by Reaside’s Head Teacher Mrs Saunders and a Parent Governor.

As students came up to present their chocolate brands, posters and market research, the sheer amount of what they had achieved over the last two days became clear. Teams spoke confidently, integrating their slogans into the presentations and making sure all judges got a close look at their work.

Briefed to pick the top three teams, we retreated to another room to begin the hard deliberations. We were particularly impressed by the strong brand developed by Team 4 and their confident presentation. The top spot was theirs having really pulled it out the bag at the last minute. Teams 3 and 2 were close behind thanks to their impressive use of pie charts and quick thinking when quizzed by the judges.

Well done to all students who took part and to our top three teams who will be taking on a new challenge on their trip to law firm Wragge & Co in January. I would also like to thank Mr Parslow for inviting me and for mentoring the students on their maths and enterprise journey.
