Bridging the Gap at IBM

Our first event at IBM helped Year 12 Business students from Cardinal Pole School get a glimpse of life at the global company. With the help of IBM volunteers, the students found out more about the history and current activities of IBM and about the many opportunities for young people to get involved.

The brief for the day was set – work in teams to construct a metre-long bridge that could stand the test of time and please the eye. The teams had to manage their resources carefully and negotiate with each other to ensure they all had the correct tools. Teams also needed to formulate a plan and construct their bridges whilst working to a strict time limit. Once the project was completed each team stood up and presented their work explaining why their designs were the best.

With the quality of the final presentations so high, the final decision as to which team would be the winner was a difficult one. After deliberating with the judges, Team JAB left with the winning prize. We would like to thank all the students who participated in the event and the volunteers whose enthusiasm and insight made this a great day.
