The School: Friern Barnet School
Friern Barnet School has been working with Enabling Enterprise for a number of years on a Secondary enterprise programme to develop skills in their students such as teamwork, Problem Solving and creativity. This year, Year 9 had the chance to take part in A Day in Politics to test their enterprise skills.
The Challenge: A Day in Politics
It was very appropriate that on the day of the U.S. elections, the Year 9 students at Friern Barnet School had the chance to set up and run their own political parties. In the morning, students were put into teams and initially took part in a debate about whether people should be fined if they do not vote. The students really impressed their tutors in the debate with their creative arguments and excellent presenting skills. Next they had to come up with their own political policies, focusing particularly on education and crime, before then using their teamwork and creativity to design branding for their political party.
It was brilliant to see Year 9 teams who had worked really well together throughout the day; supporting each other’s ideas, making sure everyone got the chance to speak and listening to one another’s opinions. The day ended with the teams preparing their speech for the final hustings where each student would have the chance to cast their own secret, individual vote to decide which party would be elected in their tutor group.
What they said:
- “It’s been really interesting to see my tutor group in a different light and to be surprised and impressed by what they are capable of doing when they work together.” – Teacher, Year 9 Form Tutor
- “I wanted to be the leader originally but then we discussed it and I voted for someone else in my team because they are an introvert and they really listen to everyone in the team which is really important as a leader.” – Student, Year 9
Well done to everyone who was involved.
