The School: Montpelier Primary School

Now in their third year working with Enabling Enterprise, Ealing-based Montpelier Primary have been expertly developing their students’ enterprise skills through Lesson-Time projects, Challenge Days as a whole school (including a magnificent Moonbase project in the summer!) and a range of business trips to top employers. Today, Year 4 were Aiming High and taking their first steps into the world of law.

The Business: Dentons, London

Dentons is a multinational law firm and the world’s largest law firm by number of lawyers. Dentons have consistently been recognised by the business and legal communities for exceptional client service and as leaders in law and business solutions, working across the world.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

Students began the day with a fantastic tour of Dentons (including 9th-floor views of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Shard) and then learnt more about law and the legal profession. They got the chance to quiz their volunteers on their roles within Dentons and how they utilise the Challenge Skills in their day-to-day tasks. The children saw and spoke to employees from a range of departments, including Accounts, IT, Human Resources and Learning & Development. They Listened Carefully as the volunteers explained how, in their role, they use Problem-Solving, Working in a Team and Staying Positive in a number of ways on a daily basis.

The teams were then set the challenge of going head-to-head with another team and advocating on behalf of one of two opposing parties in commercial law cases. After gathering evidence from the case file and choosing their strongest arguments and a compromise to suit both parties, teams presented their cases and entered into negotiation to advocate on behalf of their clients and reach a compromise that was satisfactory to their clients.

The Results:

Each legal team did a fantastic job of presenting their cases and showed unbelievable Sharing of Ideas and Problem-Solving skills to reach an amicable compromise and agreement in all three cases! With so much professional, passionate and well-prepared discussion on show, it was a hard task for the judges to decide who was the most convincing. It was particularly great to see all the children so engrossed in the tasks throughout the day and the volunteers were wholeheartedly in agreement that each and every student had demonstrated incredible Listening Carefully skills to take in so much in such a short space of time and transform themselves into confident lawyers!

What they said:

  • “I was both shocked and amazed at the way the students tackled these tasks. They really grasped the concepts and came up with amazing ideas.” – Volunteer, Dentons
  • “It’s been brilliant. Dentons have really made them feel like they work here. A fantastic day!” – Teacher, Montpelier Primary School
  • “I loved the presentation and the debate because it was so real. We had to work hard under pressure but we did it and I felt like a real lawyer.” – Student, Montpelier Primary School
  • “It’s such a brilliant way for the children to learn about the world of work. These skills are so important, from solving problems to how you meet somebody in a professional way, and it will be so useful for them in later life. I wish my generation had something like this when we were at school!” – Parent, Montpelier Primary School

Thanks to Dentons for such a great trip day, and to Class 4PC from Montpelier Primary School for coming along and making it such a memorable day.
