The School: St Mary’s and St John’s C of E School

St Mary’s and St John’s (SMSJ) in Hendon are an all-through school who are now working with Enabling Enterprise across Years 3 to 9. Previously, students have successfully applied the enterprise skills by participating in the Crime Scene and Greetings Card Challenge. On this occasion, students in Year 6 travelled to the BBC Worldwide offices in White City to become Human Resource departments and select the best candidates for three important roles.

The Business: BBC Worldwide, London

BBC Worldwide is the main commercial department of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The business exists to support the BBC’s public service mission and to maximise profits on its behalf. They do this through investing in, commercialising and showcasing content from the BBC around the world, in a way that is consistent with BBC standards and values. BBC Worldwide also build the reach and reputation of the BBC brand overseas and
champion British creativity.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

Students began the day by meeting their team and the BBC Worldwide volunteers. Soon after, they were learning more about the role of the Human Resource department before Sharing Ideas about the qualities and skills that would make the perfect BBC Worldwide employee. Once the finance manager, receptionist and cleaner job vacancies were shared, teams applied some expert Listening Carefully skills as they researched the responsibilities and skills needed for these different job roles.

The Results:

Keeping these three important roles in mind over the day, students showed off their Problem Solving to work out which of the six candidates they met would be best suited to each position. This meant our SMSJ Human Resources teams needed to work together Sharing Ideas about the strengths and areas for improvement for each potential candidate.
Students proved they were able to think creatively and explain to the BBC Worldwide volunteers how the HR department could help these future candidates address those areas of improvement. By the end of the day, collective leadership decisions had been made as each HR team took to the stage to pitch their final selections to the BBC Worldwide team.

What they said:

  • “The activities have been pitched perfectly and the content is all so relevant to our pupils. There’s been a positive impact had on every child here today.” – Teacher, SMSJ
  • ”My favourite part of today has been interacting with the students and observing them interact as team mates with each other.” – Volunteer, BBC Worldwide
  • ”This place is so inspiring, I’d love to work somewhere like this one day!” – Student, SMSJ

Thanks to BBC Worldwide for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from St Mary’s and St John’s CE School for coming along.
