The School: Grendon Primary School

Grendon Primary School in Maypole, Birmingham, are in their third year working with Enabling Enterprise. It was clear on their trip to BHSF that students were very experienced in their skills development and ready to impress the volunteers with the demonstration of their challenge skills!

The Business: BHSF, Birmingham

The Birmingham Hospital Saturday Fund (BHSF) Limited is a market-leading not-for-profit health insurer which can trace its history back to a charity which started in 1873. Originally set up to help fund Birmingham hospitals, BHSF provide affordable health insurance for individuals, employees and intermediaries. Now, BHSF insures 400,000 people through 225,000 policies; most of these help customers with their everyday health costs.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

Grendon Primary School Year 5 and 6 students began the day researching BHSF and the different jobs there. BHSF later revealed they were looking to hire three highly skilled candidates to fill vacancies in their workforce. After interviewing the volunteers and creating their perfect employee, the students set up their own Human Resources departments to research and hire the best candidates for the job. The students needed to use their Problem Solving and Leading skills to research and understand the roles, before hiring the three best candidates.

The Results:

Each team Aimed High and Stayed Positive, Working in a Team to research the job descriptions for the three job roles. They used their Problem Solving skills to choose the best candidates and then began on their persuasive presentations. The pitches impressed the judges who commented on the excellent skill development they had seen throughout the day. All teams managed to pick the best three candidates and were very satisfied with the outcome.

What they said:

  • “We have had a fantastic day. It was great for the students to solve employment-based problems!” – Teacher, Grendon Primary
  • ” Everything was at a perfect pace to keep everyone included and engaged, and it was a delight to see students come out of their shells throughout the day.” – Volunteer, BHSF
  • “We worked really well together in our teams and we gained more confidence throughout the day! It was loads of fun.” – Student, Grendon Primary

Thank you to BHSF for such a great day, and to Years 5 and 6 from Grendon Primary for coming along.
