The Schools: Southwood and Holly Park

Located in Barking and Dagenham, Southwood Primary is in its second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Student and teachers are looking forward to their Enterprise Week later this year. This trip was the perfect opportunity for the students to hone in on Using Imagination and Working in a Team they had developed last year.

Based in Friern Barnet in North London, Holly Park Primary School are in their third year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Over the course of the year, students have been working on their enterprise skills, and have already put them to the test on business trips and in their lesson-time projects. They have also completed a ‘Crime Scene’ Challenge Day successfully this year, which meant these students were well-prepared to take on today’s trip.

The Business: UBS, London

UBS is a global financial services company, specializing in wealth management, asset management and investment banking. UBS, originally an abbreviation for the Union Bank of Switzerland, can trace its origins to the mid-19th Century. Today, they provide services for private, corporate and institutional clients in over 50 countries. The students were supported throughout the day by three helpful volunteers from different areas of the business including interest rate trading and selling.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

The pupils had a tough challenge: could they play the stock market and win? They needed to be Listening Carefully to the information provided and keep Aiming High in order to make their client as much money as possible. With just a few hours of trading time they needed to use all their Problem Solving skills in order to manage the risks involved in the stock market. As the pressure increased students were challenged to use skills such as Using Imagination and Leading in order to make sure their team made the best investments they could by the end of the day.

The Results:

As the stock exchange closed the pupils had one last task; they had to demonstrate their Sharing Ideas skills by presenting back to the other schools and the Brewin Dolphin staff. It was their opportunity to reflect on their investments but more importantly on how well they had worked as a team and supported one another throughout the day! They made it tough for the judges to decide who the winning team was as they all excelled at Aiming High.

What they said:

  • “The students have walked away today with the belief that they can end up working somewhere like this one day.” – Teacher, Holly Park Primary School
  • “I was really impressed with how investment was made simple and fun for children, whilst still teaching them the skills they would need to be a trader.” – Volunteer, UBS
  • “Today we had to really stay positive, even though we lost money, we still had a smile on our faces.” – Student, Southwood

Thanks to UBS for such a great trip day, and to Southwood and Holly Park for coming along.
