The Schools: Woodhouse Primary Academy and Wheelers Lane Primary School

Wheelers Lane are a three-form entry school near Kings Heath in Birmingham and are in their fourth year with Enabling Enterprise. Students have been developing their Enterprise Skills through their Lesson-Time Projects, Business Trips and Challenge Days and were eager to get going with their construction challenge.

Woodhouse Primary Academy are in their third year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Students had the opportunity to create a new society in their Moonbase Challenge Day last year, and were keen to show off the skills they had learnt to the volunteers at Carillion.

The Business: Carillion, Paradise Circus Birmingham

Carillion plc is a British multinational construction services company headquartered in Wolverhampton. Working in the UK as well as Canada, the Middle East and the Caribbean, Carillion employs over 40,000 workers. Over the course of the day students will meet a range of volunteers from across the business and work alongside them on a fast-paced business game.

The Challenge: Terrific Towers

Working as construction companies, supported by Carillion, teams were challenged to design a new multi-purpose building which would meet the wants and needs of residents within the local community of Bogsby. Working to tight deadlines, the students made sure they made the most of the opportunity to speak to Carillion employees and find out about the world of construction. The students concluded the day by presenting their building idea and plan with the judges having the difficult task of deciding who had shown outstanding skills when Sharing Ideas and Leading.

The Results:

The teams demonstrated their skills at Staying Positive and Sharing Ideas by planning and delivering their presentations in a fast-paced professional environment. Each team proved they were Being Creative throughout the challenge, and it was a tough decision for the judges to decide who should be crowned the winners of the day. Well done to all teams for Aiming High.

What they said:

  • “I really liked how the challenge was accessible to every child. Some had the opportunity to be creative and hands-on, and some used their strengths of problem solving and presenting.” – Teacher, Wheelers Lane
  • “The kids came up with some fantastic ideas. I might give them to the team to use if they need ideas for their next project.” – Volunteer, Carillion
  • “My favourite part of the day was getting to come up with ideas and actually make it, and see it in real life.” – Student, Woodhouse Primary Academy

Thanks to Carillion for such a great trip day, and to Wheelers Lane and Woodhouse for coming along.
