The School: Wheelers Lane Primary School

Wheelers Lane are a three-form entry school near Kings Heath in Birmingham and are in their third year with Enabling Enterprise. Students have been developing their Enterprise Skills through their Lesson-Time Projects, Business Trips and Challenge Days and were eager to get going with their Day in Politics. After holding a whole-school ballot-style vote for house council earlier in the year, the students were keen to put what they knew already about politics and voting into practice as they embarked on creating their own political party!

The Challenge: Day in Politics

Students started by creating a memorable name for their political party before taking part in the Politics Quiz, testing their Problem Solving and teamworking skills. They then went on to discuss and decide which areas and people in society they wanted help before creating campaign materials to persuade others to vote for their party. Wheelers Lane students successfully did this by Listening Carefully to each other’s ideas, Working in a Team and Being Creative with their marketing material.

The Results:

All students approached the challenge with enthusiasm and maturity. The day ended with each group Presenting their party manifestos at the hustings and it was clear that each group really cared about their ideas and had thought carefully about the needs of the country. For example, one student in Year 1 had this to say: “I would make the country a better place by making more houses for the homeless people”. Students voted on their favourite political party and left the day with a deeper understanding of why politics is such an important part of society.

What they said:

  • “The children are learning so much and been engaged throughout the day ” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “Our team work has improved over the day as we started listening to each other more, it’s been fun working together and I enjoyed coming up with lots of ideas to make the country better” – Student, Year 3

Well done to everyone who was involved.
