The School: Chandlers Field Primary School

Chandlers Field Primary School, based in West Molesey, are in their first year of working in partnership with Enabling Enterprise. Having experienced some enterprise education in the past, Year 6 took on their first Challenge Day keen to bring their learning forward, with the students in Year 5 getting the chance to develop their enterprise learning and skills development through Lesson-Time Projects in the Spring Term. Today’s challenge provided an excellent opportunity to introduce Year 6 to the all-important enterprise skills, in particular Problem Solving, Sharing Ideas and Aiming High.

The Challenge: Business in a Day

Today’s challenge involved students Working in a Team of entrepreneurs. They competed in teams to set up a company, selling souvenirs for their school and the local area. In assembly, students learnt about the importance of tourism and souvenirs around the world and considered local landmarks, such as Hampton Court and the four major rivers: Thames, Mole, Wey and Ember. Teams were taken on a whirlwind tour of business through a series of mini-challenges where they formed their own company, designed a new range of souvenirs, created a catalogue of products then manufactured souvenirs in a production line.

The Results:

The students’ Working in a Team and Using Imagination skills were certainly put to the test for the day. It was great to see the students developing Staying Positive skills, particularly when it came to making quick decisions that the whole group was happy with. The teams showed excellent Leading, stretching each group member to build on their strengths and Problem Solving with maturity if any disagreement arose. The challenge culminated with students maximising their Sharing of Ideas as they presented their business’s products and explained the process involved in creating them in front of the class. They then reflected on the skills they have developed throughout the day.

What they said:

  • “It was really exciting and fun but it was a challenge: I don’t always work well with the people who were in my team, but today we enjoyed working together!” – Student, Year 6
  • “The students have shown real imagination and enthusiasm today. It could have been easy for them to get carried away in the excitement but they have shown great maturity and have learnt a lot about business and about themselves.” – Teacher, Year 6
  • “I realised that it doesn’t matter who you work with, it’s how well you work that’s important.” – Student, Year 6

Well done to everyone who was involved and it will be great to see the products being presented and perhaps even sold at a later date to visiting members of the Chandlers Field community!
