The School: Stockwell Primary School

Stockwell Primary School from South London, have been working with Enabling Enterprise for a year. They have previously taken part in the ‘Social Entrepreneur’ Challenge Day and are dedicated to develop enterprise education in their curriculum.

The Business: BuroHappold Engineering, London

BuroHappold Engineering is an international, integrated engineering consultancy operating in 23 locations worldwide, with over 50 partners and 1,800 employees including some of the world’s leading consulting engineers. For 40 years they’ve been building their reputation for delivering creative, value-led building and city solutions for an ever changing world.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

After an excellent tour of the BuroHappold’s London offices, the students were put into teams to take on the Brilliant Build enterprise challenge. The area of Bogsby has an empty site in the centre of the community. Working in a Team, the challenge for the students was to redevelop this land and create a space that would benefit the local people and the environment. Before Sharing Ideas and deciding on what they were going to construct, the teams needed to look at the needs of the people of Bogsby and also had to ensure that the new development was environmentally friendly. After building a model of their planned building space, the teams then ended the day by presenting their ideas to a judging panel.

The Results:

The students were fantastic with their Using Imagination and Sharing Ideas skills, creating some amazing ideas for the site at Bogsby. The volunteers were impressed with their Problem Solving skills and Working in a Team, as the students designed the new buildings for the community, with some based on areas they visit in Brixton. The judges were hugely impressed with the final presentations before finally deciding that there had to be a winner – but each team showed great progression in their skills and had a fantastic insight of the life of an engineer.

What they said:

  • “It was a fantastic day and the children had so much fun. A brilliant day!” – Teacher, Stockwell Primary School
  • “I was amazed by what the students could do, especially under pressure!” – Volunteer, BuroHappold Engineering
  • “I loved working on the 3D models! We had to use problem solving to make sure that Bogsby suited the communities’ needs.” – Student, Stockwell Primary School

Thanks to BuroHappold Engineering for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Stockwell Primary School for coming along.
