The School: Dairy Meadow

Dairy Meadow Primary School are in their second year of developing their enterprise skills as a Full Partner School. The staff are passionate about developing their students’ enterprise skills and the children are confidently able to recognise what skills are required in a range of situations, as shown when they recently participated in an exciting Crime Scene Investigation challenge! On this occasion, Year 5 students travelled into the city of London to apply their Problem Solving and Staying Positive skills by becoming Stock Market Traders for the day.

The Business: Brewin Dolphin

Brewin Dolphin is one of the UK’s leading providers of personalised, discretionary wealth management services, offering investment management and financial planning services to investors and intermediaries. With origins dating back to the mid-18th century, they were one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. They have offices throughout the UK & Ireland and have a wealth of experience dealing with investment markets.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

The traders began their day by interviewing their Brewin Dolphin volunteers to learn more about their roles within the financial world. After showing they could Listen Carefully, the traders met their client, Dr Taylor and set to work researching four different companies to invest the £25,00 she had come to them with. Today was also a test of Aiming High skills as each group worked together to make a big return for their client.

The Results:

As the day went by at a pace, our young traders got a real taste of what it would be like to work on a busy trading floor as they applied Problem Solving to make quick-fire decisions under pressure. This wasn’t an easy task but each group showed they were able to listen to important information to help them decide whether these 4 companies were going to remain successful or not.
By the end of their third trade, the students were ready to calculate their final return for Dr Taylor and prepare to present to a panel of Brewin Dolphin representatives on the challenges of their day. Each group gave a presentation that displayed confident public speaking and a sound understanding of the task, and the volunteers were suitably impressed!

What they said:

  • “A day full of engaging activities, supported by enthusiastic volunteers.” – Teacher, Dairy Meadow
  • “To be able to wrap their heads around some difficult financial concepts at their age was really impressive.” – Volunteer, Brewin Dolphin
  • “I really enjoyed being a trader because it’s something I’ve never done before. I thought it was difficult but I worked really well with my team and I think we did brilliantly!” – Student, Dairy Meadow

Thanks to Brewin Dolphin for such a great trip, and to Year 5 from Dairy Meadow Primary School for coming along and making it such a memorable day.
