The School: Old Moat Community Primary School

Old Moat Community Primary are working with Enabling Enterprise for the first time this year as it is a perfect fit for their focus on the concept of Growth Mindset. They invited their year 6 class to continue developing their thoughts around their own aspirations and self-belief in aiming high. The Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher, who joined the students on the trip, were eager to see the students open their minds to what they saw and experienced to encourage them to what to achieve at school and in life beyond the classroom.

The Business: Manchester Science Partnerships, Manchester

Manchester Science Partnerships kindly hosted the trip at their Citylabs 1.0 campus, in the heart of Manchester’s Innovation District and within the largest clinical academic campus in Europe. Citylabs 1.0 is a biomedical centre of excellence located on the Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) campus. The centre encourages children to stay positive and believe in aiming high by demonstrating the range of inspiring jobs people do in and around the centre: from being medical experts to the important roles of marketing and fundraising to support innovation projects.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

Teams of five were set the task of recruiting new staff members to join several departments within an expanding organisation. With a focus on Problem Solving and leadership, students competed in exciting, fast-paced activities that mimicked the processes of recruitment, persuasive pitching and events planning within a large organisation. There was a particular focus on Aiming High as the students were encouraged to lead by example from the inspiring work they saw being done at Citylabs 1.0 to make the best choices for the candidates they recruited.

The Results:

The students were a shining example of the power of enterprise education as they all delivered persuasive pitches that showed their creativity in presenting. They clearly were inspired by the feeling of excellence that surrounded them as they grew in confidence and determination to become the winning team for the day. From the smiles on their faces, it was evident that they all left as winners, having been motivated to believe in themselves and the roles they can achieve if they continue aiming high and Staying Positive.

What they said:

  • “It was impressive to see the students use the language from the trip and present in front of each other.” – Teacher, Old Moat Community School
  • “It is amazing what the skills the students are capable of and to learn never underestimate what they can achieve.” – Volunteer, Manchester Science Partnerships
  • “If you always aim high and stay positive, you always do better.” – Student, Old Moat Community School

Thanks to Manchester Science Partnerships’ Citylabs 1.0 for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from Old Moat Community Primary for coming along.
