The School: Shaftesbury Park Primary School

Shaftesbury Park Primary School are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise as a Partner School. Situated just off Lavender Hill in Battersea, Shaftesbury Park has a good reputation for being an inclusive school where everybody – governors, staff, parents and children – share a vital role in providing the best education possible. As a fundamental principle, they aim to develop rounded children who participate fully in their classes and are interested in the world around them. The children are now utilising their Enterprise Challenge Skills such as Staying Positive and Aiming High to ensure that they continue to develop and aspire to be the best that they can be. Today a lucky few Year 4 students came to visit one of Britain’s top employers to put those skills to the test in the world of work.

The Business: Waitrose Edgware Road, London

Waitrose is a chain of supermarkets, which forms the food retail division of Britain’s largest employee-owned retailer, the John Lewis Partnership. Waitrose began in 1904 as a small grocery store founded by Wallace Waite, Arthur Rose and David Taylor in Acton, West London. Today Waitrose has 322 branches across the UK. As part of their community investment programmes, they ‘aim to equip and inspire children with the mind-sets and skills needed for creative thought and action’. Today volunteers Nicola, Debbie and Amanda from the Edgware Road branch were on hand to invest their time, skills and expertise with the budding entrepreneurs from Shaftesbury Park Primary. Let’s see how they got on.

The Challenge: Recruitment Race

These 8- and 9-year olds spent the day working as part of the Waitrose Human Resources department. At the start of the day, Waitrose revealed they were looking to hire three highly skilled candidates to fill vacancies in their workforce. After interviewing the volunteers and learning more about the various roles within Waitrose on a fabulous tour of the store and offices, the students set up their own recruitment firms to research and hire the best candidates for the jobs. The mixed teams needed to use their Problem Solving, Listening Carefully and Leading skills to research and understand the roles, before hiring the three best candidates. The Waitrose volunteers gave insights into how the company is structured, before helping them to prepare for their presentation in front of the judging panel.

The Results:

Each team displayed remarkable levels of Aiming High and Staying Positive where Working in a Team was evident when they researched the job specifications and tailored their shortlist to the needs of the company. They then delivered persuasive pitches, impressing the judges as the students’ Sharing Ideas skills were praised. All teams presented their best three candidates with pride and walked away from the challenge with the confidence they had stretched their Primary enterprise to new, aspirational territories.

What they said:

  • “It was fun recruiting people because I never thought I’d be able to do this and it was hard at times, but we worked as a team and now I want to work in HR!” – Student, Shaftesbury Park Primary School
  • “It was incredible to see these children rise to every challenge and achieve so much in such a short time. They have worked so hard and were so confident when presenting their results.” – Volunteer, Waitrose
  • “I am proud of myself for giving the presentation because I don’t usually like to stand up in front of people but today I felt confident.” – Student, Shaftesbury Park Primary School

Thanks to Waitrose Edgware Road for such a great trip day, and to Year 4 from Shaftesbury Park Primary for coming along and making it such a memorable day all round.
