The School: Becontree Primary School

Becontree Primary School, located in the borough of Barking & Dagenham, is now in its second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Students across the school have been developing their enterprise skills through a range of Lesson-Time Projects and trips to businesses across a range of sectors. Having already taken part in a whole-school Challenge Day back in May, today was an excellent opportunity for these Year 5 students to see what those enterprise skills looked like in action at Societe Generale.

The Business: Societe Generale, London

With a headquarters in Paris, Societe Generale is a large European Bank and a major Financial Services company that has a global presence, offering retail banking in France and transaction banking around the world. As an organisation, they are able to give excellent insight into the working environment in a multi-national company within the financial sector. Exchange House, in the heart of London’s banking district, is one of its 4 UK offices.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

The students were asked to put their Working in a Team skills to the test as they were placed in stock market traders’ shoes for the day, making informed and cautious investment decisions for their fictional client, Dr Taylor. They discussed what made a company successful for its investors, and then Shared Ideas to select the portfolio they thought would best match their client’s priorities as well as maximise their return. Their Staying Positive skills were being tested throughout the day as the fortunes of companies in which they had invested altered.

The Results:

Students learnt about risk and reward, and were quick to grasp key concepts about what makes a successful stock trader, as well as some of the key issues and challenges facing businesses. As ever, the stock market was not always kind and there were losses as well as gains! However, every team had regular discussions about how to Stay Positive and Listened Carefully to their volunteer from Societe Generale, who offered tips on how to read the markets and react to news about companies when choosing how much to invest and in which businesses. When the stock market floor closed, teams worked out how much of a return they had made for Dr Taylor and then expertly Shared their Ideas in a series of professional presentations. The teams reflected on their progress throughout the day and were very open in discussing how they felt they had performed, both in terms of investment success and in Staying Positive and Working in a Team.

What they said:

  • “I learnt that I could not do this on my own and I needed my group there to support me and to share their ideas with me.” – Student, Becontree Primary School
  • “Each child found a role in their team with all members of the groups, whether the most or least confident, able to contribute with a sense of success. Team skills and listening were visibly seen to develop throughout the day” – Teacher, Becontree Primary School
  • “I loved it when we were trading and investing because I’ve never done that before but I feel I know what to do now and want to do it again!” – Student, Becontree Primary School

Thanks to Societe Generale for such a great trip, and to Year 5 from Becontree Primary School for coming along and making it such a memorable day.
