The School: Fossdene Primary School

Year 6 from Fossdene are no strangers to Primary enterprise in London having created radio shows in their ‘Going Live’ Lesson-time Project last year. Today’s visit was an excellent chance to get to grips with the law before their ‘Legal Eagles’ Lesson-time Project later this year.

The Business: Gowling WLG, London

Gowling WLG is a Global 100 legal practice, with over 1,400 legal professionals and a range of dedicated business support teams across 18 cities in the UK, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The Challenge: Ace Advocates

After meeting their volunteers and learning about how lawyers use enterprise skills in their everyday jobs, the teams of students went on a tour of the impressive Gowling WLG Head Office. In this challenge students became a team of top lawyers, arguing on behalf of their client in a negotiation. Students learned about the legal system and how law firms support companies, corporations and small businesses with dispute resolution..

The Results:

Students focused on their Listening Carefully and Sharing Ideas skills as they analysed classified files, decided on their key arguments and entered into a negotiation. Over the course of day, it was great to see Fossdene’s Year 6’s really thinking about the different sides of the argument and confidently negotiating on behalf of their clients. The volunteers from Gowling WLG had a tough time choosing a winning team, praising each team’s resilience and determination.

What they said:

  • “Today’s visit has had a very positive impact on my students: Working with other adults, having to show initiative and independence and linking prior learning (not directly associated or pre-taught) in a real world setting. I was also impressed with the scope and structure of the challenge” – Teacher, Fossdene Primary School
  • “The students have really experienced what it’s like to do our job: they needed to think carefully about what really matters in a dispute: what’s worth arguing over and what you are prepared to give up.” – Volunteer, Gowling WLG
  • “I’m proud of working with students I don’t normally work with and of reaching an agreement in our negotiation.” – Student, Fossdene Primary School

Thanks to Gowling WLR for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from Fossdene Primary School for coming along.
