The School: Matchborough First School

The Year 2 students from Matchborough First School, in Redditch were keen and eager to show, that they had learned a lot about what it meant to be enterprising during their visit to Lovell, Woodgate Valley. Over the last 12 months in school, the 6- and 7-year olds have already taken part in a whole-school Challenge Day and three engaging Lesson-Time Projects for their Primary enterprise in the West Midlands.

The Business: Lovell, Woodgate Valley Birmingham

Founded in 1972 in Swindon, Lovell is a leading construction company building affordable homes in the UK. The company employs 1400 staff across 6 UK regions.

The Challenge: Brilliant Builds

The day began by meeting the excellent volunteers from Lovell, finding out about their jobs and the enterprise skills they use each and every day at work. The students then had the opportunity to explore the workplace, ask questions, look at plans and even have a go at designing a new property using a Computer Aided Design (C.A.D.) system. This proved really useful when challenged to come up with ideas to meet the needs of a local community and redevelop a brownfield site – the ideas kept coming!

The Results:

The teams worked superbly well together, focussing on Sharing Ideas. Everyone was able to ask and answer questions about their proposed buildings for the development site. It was noted how each team listened carefully to each other and the volunteers, particularly in the way they used the information they gathered about the needs and wants of the community to really come up with great ideas that would improve the area for everyone.

What they said:

  • “This is fantastic. The children are all totally focussed. The day has been pitched just right to ensure everyone stayed positive. The volunteers have been great.” – Teacher, Matchborough First School
  • “I can’t believe these children are only 6! They are showing they have developed some super skills already – we could be recruiting some of these in a few years’ time! Another thoroughly enjoyable day!” – Volunteer, Lovell
  • “I’d like to work at Lovell when I am older. I think I could design some really good houses. I will do one for you if you like.” – Student, Matchborough First School

Thanks to Lovell for such a great trip day as always, and to Year 2 students and teachers from Matchborough First School for your energy throughout the day.
