The School: Southgate Primary

Students in Years 4, 5 and 6 at Southgate Primary School travelled into the City of London to take part in an exciting enterprise challenge at investment management company, Brewin Dolphin. Southgate Primary, located in Crawley, have been working to develop their enterprise skills over the past two years. These students were eager to apply skills such as Problem Solving and Staying Positive in a real world context during the Trading Triumphs challenge.

The Business: Brewin Dolphin

Brewin Dolphin is one of the UK’s leading providers of personalised, discretionary wealth management services, offering investment management and financial planning services to investors and intermediaries. With origins dating back to the mid-18th century, they were one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. They have 28 offices throughout the UK & Ireland and have a wealth of experience dealing with investment markets.

Volunteers from across the business joined Southgate students to support them with their challenge throughout the day.

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

The Southgate students began the day by learning all about the Stock Exchange before taking on the role of Stock Market traders. Our busy traders were soon introduced to their client, scientist Dr Taylor, who placed her trust with each team to help her make a large return on her £25,000 initial investment. Each group listened carefully and made notes on Dr Taylor’s personal needs before conducting research into four different companies they could potentially invest her money in.

The Results:

As the day went on, our traders worked together in their teams to share their ideas on which companies Dr Taylor would be happy to invest in whilst also considering how successful these companies would remain as time went on. With support from their Brewin Dolphin volunteers the traders were able to complete two separate trades before calculating how much return they made for their client. Before the end of the day, our traders pulled together as a team to reflect on the successes of their investment decisions and prepared to present their results to the Brewin Dolphin judges. Guest judge Chris Edwards explained how impressed he was with the level of problem solving and huge returns made by each group after hearing their presentations.

What they said:

  • “It’s been great to watch them work through this challenge as a team and think carefully about including everyone’s ideas before reaching a decision,” – Teacher, Southgate
  • “They were all engaged and responded effectively to the information given to them over the day to inform their decision making.” – Volunteer, Brewin Dolphin
  • “We know Dr Taylor will be very happy with our massive return but I wouldn’t of been able to do it on my own.” – Student, Year 5, Southgate

Thanks to Brewin Dolphin for such a great trip day, and to Years 4, 5 and 6 from Southgate Primary School for coming along.
