The School: Salisbury Primary School

Today, at M&G, we were joined by students from Salisbury Primary School in Newham, London. Having worked with Enabling Enterprise for a few years, the students have great experience with the Lesson-Time Projects, Challenge Days and enterprise skills. In preparation for their Trash to Treasure and Design Company projects in Spring, today was an excellent opportunity for 10 Year 3 and Year 4 students to put their enterprise skills to the test with a day of challenges focusing on the world of finance.

The Business: M&G, London

M&G is a leading investment manager in the UK and overseas, working in offices across Europe and Asia to ensure that their clients make the most of their money. As part of City Giving Day, M&G hosted a visit from the Lord Mayor of the City of London, who was extremely interested in the continuing partnership between Enabling Enterprise, M&G and schools in London. Today, students were joined by volunteers from different areas of the business including Performance Analytics and Investment Management. Students were also incredibly pleased to meet the CEO, and a current employee who used to go to Salisbury primary!

The Challenge: Trading Triumphs

After meeting with the volunteers and finding out a little bit more about what M&G do, the students get down to business. In teams, they explore the terms ‘client’ and ‘risk’ through a game of Higher or Lower. Over the course of the day, teams must work together to make decisions about how best to invest their client’s money. By Listening Carefully to their volunteers and each other, the teams get lots of information about the different companies in which they can invest.

The Results:

Alongside Staying Positive when a few investments turned sour, the teams demonstrated excellent Problem Solving when it came down to making some tricky investment decisions. The students and staff at Salisbury were thrilled to be joined by a current employee from M&G who used to go to Salisbury Primary school; it was really special to hear about her journey from Salisbury Primary to Cambridge University studying economics and all the way to working at M&G. At the end of the day, the teams presented their work in the auditorium to a large audience of M&G employees and I think it’s fair to say that everyone in the room was thoroughly impressed by these future traders in the making!

What they said:

  • “The staff here have been amazing, so welcoming and really encouraging of the children. It was so great for them to hear from someone who actually went to their school. ” – Teacher, Salisbury Primary School
  • “Their level of teamwork is far beyond anything I would have been able to do at their age. It’s clear they’ve been working on developing skills back at school – they were asking each others’ opinions and checking that they all agreed before making a decision.” – Volunteer, M&G
  • “Teaching these skills around how to interact and work together so early on means they will carry it through the rest of their time at school and beyond. I see it all the time at interviews when candidates have all the knowledge but you know that they are lacking the skills to work with the rest of the team – this massively helps to address this issue.” – Volunteer, M&G
  • “I’m really proud of myself for getting on the big stage and for getting on with my team all day” – Student, Salisbury Primary School

Thanks to M&G for such a great trip day, and to Years 3 and 4 from Salisbury Primary School for coming along.
