The School: Coopers School

Coopers School in Chislehurst, Bromley are in their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise on their secondary enterprise programme. Last year, every year group took part in an enterprise Challenge Day and winning teams were rewarded with trips to top businesses such as the French bank Societe Generale and the law firm DLA Piper to step into the shoes of employees for a day.

The Challenge: Invest It Best and Business in a Day

Year 12 students worked in teams as investment managers to try and make the most return for their client Mr I C Are. They had to use their problem solving and listening skills in order to successfully invest Mr Are’s money in the range of companies on offer.

Year 10 students spent the day as entrepreneurs, working in teams to set up their very own souvenir company with a unique name, logo and range of souvenir designs. Throughout the day they had to use teamwork and creativity to ensure their souvenirs were of the highest quality and made on time.

The Results:

Year 12 teams worked hard to listen carefully to the information given, evaluate this and make quick decisions. They were particularly careful to ensure that the ethics of the companies were considered to meet the needs of their client versus the opportunity to make money. The students believed that risk-taking and listening skills were essential to becoming a successful investment manager.

Year 10 really impressed their teachers and the EE staff with their teamwork during the production stage as it was brilliant to see teams delegating roles and setting up a clear manufacturing line for their souvenirs. The Year 10 Coopers students also gave clear confident pitches at the end of the day to try and persuade the judges to invest in their souvenir company.

What they said:

  • “It’s great to see them doing maths that’s true to the real world.” – Teacher, Year 12
  • “I understand as an investment manager the importance of taking risks but they must also be smart risks.” – Student, Year 12
  • “The teamwork that went on was incredible! I’ve never seen anything like it.” – Teacher, Year 10
  • “I really enjoyed how much it was like real life today for example when we had to decide how to spend our budget and be really creative with the materials we bought. Learning how to spend money sensibly and how business works is really important.” – Student, Year 10

Well done to everyone who was involved.
