The School: Parkside Primary School

Parkside Primary School is located in the London Borough of Waltham Forest and is in its first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Over the year students have begun to gain experience of Enabling Enterprise programmes, with students from Year 5 having taken part in trips to businesses, and other year groups having completed lesson-time projects, so today’s Challenge Day was an excellent opportunity for the whole school to build on the eight enterprise skills.

The Challenge: Crime Scene Challenge

Students were set the challenge of becoming detectives for the day to try to catch the Sugar Snatcher – a criminal who had broken into the school and stolen all the chocolate from the school in the dead of night. Pupils had to work in teams and use their problem solving skills to analyse various kinds of evidence discovered over the course of the day and evaluate how each piece of evidence might link to the four suspects. At the end of the day, each team had to present their case to the case officer and explain how the evidence led them to their conclusions.

The Results:

Students across all year groups at Parkside Primary School showed fantastic teamwork throughout the day, particularly when visiting the crime scene. Students took turns to record the evidence they had seen, and supported each other in coming up with theories to explain the evidence. When it came to presenting to the case officer, there were some teams who disagreed over which suspect they thought was guilty, but it was lovely to see students in all year groups compromising and listening to the ideas of others in order to present a coherent and persuasive argument at the end of the day.

What they said:

  • “We’ve only been doing Enabling Enterprise for a year but the students’ progress is noticeable. This was evident today – at the start of the day there were a few disagreements between team members but throughout the day they’ve really learnt how to compromise.” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “Today has been great because it’s a change from a normal school day and it’s interesting to see what being a detective is like.” – Student, Year 6

Well done to everyone who was involved.
