The School: Kender Primary School

Kender Primary School, located in Lewisham, have been working in partnership with Enabling Enterprise since 2013. Over the past few years, students have been developing their enterprise learning and skills development both inside and outside the classroom through a variety of Lesson-Time Projects and trips to businesses across London. This year, Year 4 have been completed ‘Brilliant Books’ and ‘Number Crunching’ in class. Today’s challenge provided an excellent opportunity to consolidate the Year 4 students’ hard work and introduce Year 5 and 6 to the all-important enterprise skills.

The Challenge: Business in a Day

Today’s challenge involved students Working in a Team of entrepreneurs. They competed in teams to set up a company selling souvenirs for London. In assembly, students learnt about the importance of tourism and souvenirs in London. Teams were taken on a whirlwind tour of business through a series of mini-challenges where they formed their own company, designed a new range of souvenirs, created a catalogue of products then manufactured souvenirs in a production line.

The Results:

The students’ Working in a Team skills were certainly put to the test in their teams of mixed year groups for the day. It was great to see the students developing Staying Positive, particularly when it came to making quick decisions that the whole group was happy with. The teams showed excellent Leading skills, stretching each group member building on their strengths. Problem Solving with maturity if any disagreement arose. The challenge culminated with students maximising their Sharing Ideas as they presented their business ideas in front of the class and reflected on the skills they have developed throughout the day.

What they said:

  • “All the students have done Enabling Enterprise before so are familiar with the skills, but today was a great opportunity for them to consolidate all that learning and take them out of their comfort zone working with new people.” – Teacher, Year 5
  • “This morning the Year 5’s were really quiet but we have worked together to make sure everyone gets to say their ideas and help to make our souvenirs.” – Student, Year 6

Well done to everyone who was involved.
