The School: Priestmead Primary School and Nursery

Located in Harrow, Priestmead Primary School & Nursery are new to working with Enabling Enterprise. They have already planned an exciting 3-year enterprise programme to prepare their students with the skills that lead to success. After a successful whole-school Challenge Day in the autumn term, today was a great opportunity for students from Year 2 to use their enterprise skills in the world of work.

The Business: First State Investments, London

First State Investments is a global asset management business with experience across a range of asset classes and specialist investment sectors. They manage investments on behalf of institutional investors and pension funds, wholesale distributors and platforms, financial advisers and their clients. They employ teams of investors who are specialists in their respective fields and set their own investment style. They have offices in London, Edinburgh, Paris, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Jakarta, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Beijing and Shenzhen.

The Challenge: Money Matters

Students were set the challenge of working in teams to design a successful sweet shop. They needed to persuade the bank to give them a start-up loan, and then decide how they would invest their money in different confectionery companies. After deciding which companies they wanted to invest in, teams then had to create a welcome sign for their new shop and use their imaginations to come up with a range of creative sweet products.

The Results:

‘A year has passed’ and the budding entrepreneurs were keen to work out how much profit their investments had generated. Students helped each other in their teams with support from the First State experts to calculate their return on investment. Based on each team’s excellent teamwork over the day, it was not surprising to see that every team made a considerable profit! It was therefore only fitting that, at the end of the day, each team was given a skill award based on the skill they had developed the most over the course of the day’s challenge.

What they said:

  • “The day was well-organised and very interactive, and it was great to have lots of fabulous volunteers!” – Teacher, Priestmead
  • “It was really good to have such a strong focus on the enterprise skills – I think the children benefitted from knowing exactly which skills they were developing, and it really helped us to have a framework within which to give praise to the students.” – Volunteer, First State
  • “Today was very different from school because we have worked in teams, so we have been able to share more ideas.” – Student, Priestmead

Thanks to First State for such a great trip day, and to Year 2 from Priestmead Primary School for coming along.
