The School: Isle of Ely Primary School

This is the first year that Isle of Ely Primary School, located in Cambridgeshire, have been working alongside Enabling Enterprise to develop skills across the curriculum. Both inside and outside of school, the students have been learning about the importance of developing a wide set of skills through a range of Lesson-Time Projects, Challenge Days and trips to businesses. Today was another excellent opportunity for 15 Year 1 students to apply their enterprise learning to a real-life situation.

The Business: Civil Service, Cambridge

The Civil Service helps the government of the day develop and implement its policies as effectively as possible. These offices include The Department for Local Government, Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

The Challenge: WoW Challenge: Wonderful Office Workspace

After learning a little bit about the world of work by looking at why, and where, different people go to work, the students had an opportunity to speak to volunteers on an office tour about their roles within the Civil Service. The teams were then set the challenge of designing a brand new office space for the Cambridge branch of the Civil Service. Together, they shared lots of ideas and used plenty of imagination to come up with the most creative design solutions to ensure staff were able to be happy and relaxed at work.

The Results:

By the end of the day, each group had worked to divide up roles within their teams to draw and label their unique office spaces. They worked alongside a Civil Services volunteer to practise presenting their office space to the judges that were to visit them in the afternoon. Once again, students proved they were able to apply their sharing ideas and imagination skills to deliver interesting office tours and so were all winners on the day.

What they said:

  • “This was a great opportunity for the children to apply the skills they’ve been developing in the classroom.”- Teacher, Isle of Ely Primary School
  • “I’ve been so impressed with how teams have been able to problem solve when things got a little challenging.” – Volunteer, Civil Service
  • “I think working in a team helps me have more ideas.” – Student, Isle of Ely Primary School

Thanks to Civil Service for such a great trip day, and to Years 1 from Isle of Ely Primary School for coming along.
